Analogue Productions redo another of the great Living Stereo series, this time putting each of 2 recordings previously on 1 SACD onto 2 seperate discs. At least now there is no longer a mix of both 2ch & 3ch tracks on the same SACD. This Tchaikovsky was previously with the Brahms Violin Concerto.
The Tchaikovsky was recorded in April, 1957 on 3-track 15 ips tape. Remastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analogue 3-track tapes!
RCA’s “golden age” was more like a “golden minute” – in a scant period, roughly from 1958 to 1963, the beginning of the stereo era – pure vacuum tube amplification helped produce recordings demonstrating unparalleled fidelity & warmth, lifelike presence & midband illumination.
Hailed as 1 of the greatest – perhaps the greatest violinists of this century — Jascha Heifetz delivers what is considered an unequaled performance of Tchaikovsky’s beloved concerto. Conductor Fritz Reiner & the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in top form, provide the perfect context for Maestro Heifetz’s dazzling performance.
