When we talk about the future of American indie rock, we are tempted to take a trip to Brooklyn or Philadelphia or even Seattle or Los Angeles. Yet Charlotte (North Carolina) has her say and it's with the Alright group that we are dealing. The trio is led by Sarah Blumenthal, who was heard alongside Late Bloomer here who intends to show off her talent with a debut album called I’m Doing This To Myself.
Here are ten compositions where Alright brings their pop-punk and emo influences to life with a hint of fuzz that suits them perfectly. From the introductory title called "Scraps" to "Dewdrops" through the explosives "Parallel", "Lapse" and other "Wild Dunes" which will recall the golden age of Sub Pop in the early 1990s, Sarah Blumenthal and her gang go wild and vent all their frustrations with respect to human relations which are becoming more and more complex.
Here, Alright highlights the hypocrisy of their entourage, notably on “No Good” where Sarah Blumenthal sings: “You don't answer my calls and I don't hear from you anymore / But you still find a way to occupy my mind from time to time ”, and we easily recognize ourselves in this situation which 200% smacks of lived experience. I'm Doing This To Myself is not yet another indie punk record ideal for pooching but more a record that encourages reflection rather than self-flagellation in order to start off on a good basis as attested by "Tiptoe" and " Steady ”which close the ceremony. Like what, the Charlotte scene also has a say and wants to be respected.
