Mastercuts' three-volume Classic Rare Groove series provides a sampling of the early-'90s U.K.-based phenomenon curated by Norman Jay, the DJ behind London's pirate radio station Kiss FM. The term "rare groove," as defined by Jay through his play lists, encompasses late-'70s and early-'80s dance musics that take in disco, R&B, jazz, funk, and all hybrids of those genres. While each volume has some true treasures, not everything can be expected to be earth-shattering. The first volume features Eighties Ladies' "Turned on to You," Leon Ware's "Why I Came to California," Breakwater's "Say You Love Me Girl," Roberta Gilliam's "All I Want Is My Baby," and Patrice Rushen's "Number One."
