This limited edition contains three discs. Of the three, only the third disc contains half new stuff - the No. 1 Piano Concerto by Chopin played during the 1960 March International Chopin Piano Competition.
This is a historical recording, mono and grainy sound, typical radio stuff of the late 1950's.
Still, you can hear Pollini very clearly - the piano sound is reasonably clear, and with much 'live' enthusiasm that many professional 'critics' allege here on Amazon to be lacking from Pollini.
In fact, you can hear the eruption of applause before the final cadence of the third movement was struck, heralding the birth of a new champion.
Pollini never recorded the Chopin concerti with DG. The 'competition live version' here has never been issued before.
The rest of the CDs are reissued stuff and I particularly would have wished that the 1960 recording of Pollini's Chopin Etudes could have been issued with this album.
Even so, this deluxe edition contains wonderful photographs taken from the maestro's own family album. You have Rudolf Serkin, Sviastoslav Richter, Arturo Rubinstein, Sinopli, Abbado...and a full account of the maestro's piano discography with DG (EMI excluded, operatic recording excluded).
For late Pollini fans, this indeed satisfies curiosities.
