Theatre director Giorgio Strehler once said in an interview to discuss the works of one of the most important composers of the Twentieth century: "My theater is held together by the notes of Fiorenzo Carpi. Very often his music has given me--at the beginning or duration of my work--the inside 'clarification' that I needed most, the lighting of a 'whole' that I wasn’t able to capture."

The filmography that is penned by the Milanese composer is one that is boundless, with some of his worldwide successes alongside great directors such as Louis Malle, Luigi Comencini or Carlo Mazzacurati, randomly choosing among his infinite soundtracks. Today the notes written by Carpi are born again in this new project by renown pianist Edward Simon who, together with trusted players Scott Colley, Clarence Penn and Diego Urcola (here as guest), ties together the most beautiful pages penned by Maestro Carpi. From Le avventure di Pinocchio to Mio Dio come sono caduta in basso, performed by the splendid Laura Antonelli in 1974, through to Diario di un maestro and La baraonda.

The narrative force of the melody becomes a precious and poignant instrument in the hands of Simon, and the force of this narration reaches heights of absolute lyricism in the eight-eight keys of this pianist from Venezuela. Not a jazz rereading of a modified piece, but a reinterpretation able to give new life and new nourishment to Carpi's compositions. For this reason "A Master’s Diary" is without doubt one of the most intriguing works that Simon has recorded for CAM JAZZ.
