For his third recording for the Hamburg label ES-Dur, the celebrated German trumpeter Matthias Höfs turns to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with charming chamber music arrangements for trumpet with string trio and piano.

Among the well-known pieces that Matthias Höfs has selected for this album are the first movement of Mozart’s Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra, arranged for trumpet, piano and strings, and the ‘Kegelstatt’ Trio for piano, clarinet and viola with the trumpet replacing the reed instrument. And the Overture to Mozart’s opera ‘Il Seraglio’ takes on a very different face with this sextet for trumpet, two violins, cello piano and percussion.

Matthias Höfs is no stranger to recording arrangements: his ES-dur debut, ‘Hommage!’, transformed sonatas by C.P.E. Bach while his second, ‘Trumpet Acrobatics’, included several salon orchestra versions of virtuoso pieces from Bizet to Piazzolla. A noted virtuoso and exceptionally empathetic master of his instrument, he has been a key member of German Brass, performing internationally and making over 20 recordings with the ensemble. He held the position of solo trumpet with the Hamburg Philharmonic for 16 years and he’s also played with numerous German orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and Munich Philharmonic. Höfs appears regularly in the UK - he is currently Visiting Professor of Trumpet at the Royal College of Music.
