A Imagem da Melancolia Recorder Consort - The Bad Tempered Consort - 17th Century Portugese Polyphony (2009) [CD-Rip]

A Imagem da Melancolia was created in 2002 with the aim of exploring the renaissance polyphonic repertoire. The ensemble’s core is constituted of five recorder players but other instrumentalists or singers can be added according to the nature of the project. A Imagem da Melancolia seeks to bring to modern ears a sound and musical experience unknown to music listeners of today.

The recorders used in this performance are faithful reproductions of period instruments from several different museums. They were originally made by two different workshops, and made perhaps as much as 50 years apart. Little is known about the makers of renaissance woodwind instruments. Their instruments were rarely signed and so the small differences in the design inevitably leads us into the realm of speculation. Most of the music featured on this collection of 17th century polyphony is anonymous, although some of the pieces are attributed to Pedro de San Lorenzo, Pedro de Araújo, Manuel Rodrigues Coelho, and António Carreira.
