Sammy Davis kept a number of songs, like "Birth of the Blues," in his repertoire for years. This live CD includes this and other numbers upon which he put a permanent stamp. These invigorating performances offer a well-rounded picture of this late 20th century entertainment phenomenon; Davis's electrifying stage presence is palpable.
He freely adds dramatic touches, such as impersonating a raspy aging entertainer in "Mr. Bojangles," a heart-felt touch that doesn't appear in his studio-recorded version. "Candy Man" is performed with an especially effective arrangement, well suited to Davis' dramatic mood changes, as he slows down and seamlessly segues into "What Kind of Fool Am I."
