Uffe Steen is a unique musician. He has his very own eclectic style and sound and plays both inventive, beautiful and melodic, naughty, quirky, energetic and persistent. As on Twangz, Uffe Steen is flanked on his new album by his two absolutely brilliant and equal teammates, Thomas Sejthen on double bass and the janissary Jesper Bo Knudsen. The use of double bass is an excellent feature that works well in close tandem work with Jesper Bo Knudsen's drums.
Together, the three musicians lift the material on Retroscope well above what one otherwise hears in the borderland between blues, (rock) and jazz. The album consists of ten tracks, all written by Uffe Steen except one. Uffe Steen has also produced the album, and both production and sound are excellent. Jakob Worm is also responsible for recording, mixing and mastering.
In the spirit of the album title and the black and white photos on the cover, Uffe Steen & co. out with the raw swinging "A call from the sixties mk II". The number pushes on and has more than a touch of blues rock on it. 60s beat music and blues boom haunt the scenery. It jerks like hell.
Here there are plenty of guitar garlands and quirks to rejoice over. The absolutely formidable, original and unique guitar playing gives the listener a powerful mental gasp of dimensions. In addition, forward-thinking, distinguished and intense play from Thomas Sejthen and Jesper Bo Knudsen. Thus, the level is set and the bar set high for the music on this album.
