Valentín Caamaño Trio - The Blind Wrestler (2020)

Cool post bop moods are created by guitarist/vocalist Valentin Caamano and his team of Alfonso Calvo/b, LAR Legido/dr and Xose Miguelez/ts. His guitar tone and style gives hints of Jim Hall, with a sleek coolness as he teams with Miguelez on the lithe title track and the laconic “Again Never” as Legido adds muscle to the latter’s intro and hip palpitations to the former. The leader also sings a bit, sounding a bit like a South American Chet Baker, hep to Legido’s brushes on “Turn the Screw” thoughtful with Calvo during “How Deep is the Ocean” and tensile on “Tiny Moon.” The team kinetically bops well during “ May Your Blues” showing a strong pulse for Caamano to deliver some clever and spacious solos. A well fitting and modern suit.
