Part of the honky-tonk holy trinity with Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell, George Jones brought country music into the modern era. By the time Jones joined Mercury in 1958, his heart-wrenching voice had shed the more unrefined aspects of traditional country without sacrificing any of the emotion or range. He showcased his new vocal polish on early hits including "White Lightning" and "Color of the Blues." Pining ballads such as "She Thinks I Still Care" remain torch-song classics while upbeat numbers like "The Race is On" show Jones is capable of rollicking hard country. These 44 hits include duets with Melba Montgomery, James Taylor, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, and, especially, wife (and then ex-wife) Tammy Wynette. --Marc Greilsamer
