Michael Chance established a worldwide reputation as one of the foremost exponents of the male alto voice in all areas of the classical repertoire. Paul Beier accompanies this selection of Dowland songs with solo lute music. In his mind, John Dowland was truly living “in darkness,” and the theme of darkness permeates the lyrics of many of his last songs, the most emblematic of which is 'In darkness let me dwell'.
