Charles Mingus in Paris: The Complete America Session is a compilation of two albums by American bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus which were recorded in Paris in 1970 and first released on the French America label as Blue Bird and Pithycanthropus Erectus. The compilation was released on the Sunnyside label in 2006 with all the released tracks combined on one CD and a second CD of additional tracks featuring false starts and incomplete takes from the session. It was the great mans first stint in a recording studio in seven years, after spending half the 60s all but invisible, mired in depression and financial problems. Eventually, the electricity problem was solved, and the sextet Mingus had put together for this little-known return eventually plays a glorious 18-minute-plus take on the number. Charles Mingus, the legendary jazz bassist and composer, possessed spontaneity and a passionate attention to rehearsal in equal measure. But Mingus' career was also peppered with highs and lows, a direct result of a mercurial relationship with bandmates and a tempestuous relationship with critics and the public. This just-released recording from October 1970 shows a Mingus revitalized, working with a tight five-piece band able to bird-dog his every musical step.
