Mosaic, the Debut Album by Melbourne Bassist Mike Mathews… Mike Mathews’ debut album “Mosaic” features some of Australia’s finest musicians. Highlights are improvised solos and fine ensemble work by Joe Chindamo (piano), Gary Norman (guitar), Tom See Poy (piano) and Mathews himself. The “supporting cast” is equally impressive and contribute to this diverse collection. Written and produced by the artist, “Mosaic” consists of fresh, innovative arrangements fusing jazz, Latin, funk/soul and even some classical elements. This is a highly original work full of rich, textured musical detail and recorded to audiophile standards.

Mathews’ professional background as a bassist is very diverse and ranges from tours with Gene Pitney, Brian Cadd and Ricky May to work in TV studio bands, theatre shows such as “Cats” (650 performances), commercial jingles, as a sideman on several dozen albums, as well as a plethora of live work from pop music dates to jazz gigs with the Joe Chindamo Trio.

The “Mosaic” album project is a recording consisting largely of original compositions and reflects Mathews’ lifetime fascination and interest in improvisation whilst also encompassing his broad range of musical influences. Currently enjoying air play and excellent reviews in Australia, here are what some are saying about Mathews and the Mosaic album:

“Mike is one of those people who loves music so much that it reminds us that to dedicate one’s life to this art form is a noble thing. His passion for it permeates throughout his work; his musical craftsmanship and attention to detail are the most meticulous I’ve ever known. Creatively, his artistic restlessness and boundless resources place him in the highest echelon of the bassist / producer / composer genre.”
