Cobbled together to capitalize on the success of Smokey and the Bandit, East Bound & Down contains three of Jerry Reed's contributions to the soundtrack of that film along with odds and ends from previous albums. The title track is the big attraction, being a number two country hit and an infectious trucking song, while the other two soundtrack cuts are ephemeral and corny. The remaining tracks offer a little of everything, from a Coasters cover ("Framed") to a Bob Dylan cover ("Don't Think Twice, It's All Right") to the sappy "Rainbow Ride." East Bound & Down might be an adequate stand-in for the Smokey and the Bandit soundtrack for those fans who are only interested in Reed's contributions, but it is otherwise a shoddy piece of make-do product.
