Isang Yun should be justly considered a major composer of the 20th century, with a remarkable style which achieved a unique and rigorous fusion of avant-garde, neo-romantic, and Asian elements. A first-hand participant in some of the most dramatic events of the century - he was imprisoned and tortured twice, and ultimately died from effects of his injuries - his work is of remarkable intensity and conviction.
The five symphonies were written as a unified cycle in the 1980s. For anyone interested in 20th century symphonists such as Nielsen, Brian, Martinu, Petterson, Villa-Lobos and others, this is work of equal stature, and a must-have.
