Altoist Peter Epstein is not that famous, but he is in superior form throughout this piano-less trio date. Inspired by bassist Scott Colley and drummer Peter Erskine, Epstein is the main voice, sometimes hinting at Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman but mostly sounding like his own adventurous self. The group performs eight originals, pianist James Carney's "Zelzah," and Duke Ellington's "For Harry Carney." Epstein's steady flow of creative ideas and the musicians' close interplay make this set of strong interest for post-bop jazz collectors.
