RUMBLINGS FROM THE GOLDEN UNDERGROUND
The first time I heard the name Cam Mullins I thought it was either a new comic strip character or some kind of a part for a racing engine.
The widely renowned arranger, con- ductor, composer, Bill Justis was the first to recommend Cam to me. He hired him to play trumped on a Monument session.
And one of my favorite bits of verse: “Two men look out through the bars: one sees the mud, and one the stars.” One the great human weaknesses is that of categorization. I was guilty by indexing Cam among the good session musicians and not exploring his other potentials -
Until Ray Price gave him his chance to prove something by hiring him to arrange and conduct Danny Boy Which put Ray in a whole new bag, Cam in a brand new light and both in a different tax bracket.
It occurs to me that Cam has earned The right to record this album the hardest possible way - in the studio where many a creative giant crumbles under the pressure. The pressure of producing the highest quality work in the shortest possible time.
And that as much as i enjoy working with Cam I am enjoying his friendship even more. For he is a gentle man with a warm heart and a beautiful soul, the kind of guy you would most like to have a buddy or a Brother.
And it would necessarily figure that his music would reflect a gentle golden touch, and it does but it has many other characteristics you can discover for yourself as you explore the golden underground. FRED FOSTER
