With "Bunt", Michel Schroeder and his large ensemble have succeeded in making an exciting and complex debut album. Proof of how creative and vocal young German jazz is, even in difficult times.
The 25-year-old trumpeter (2018 Lübeck Jazz Prize, 2019 Katowice Composers Award, Elbjazz Festival) leads one of the most unusual and exciting ensembles that young German jazz has to offer. The Michel Schroeder Ensemble consists of no fewer than 17 members.
With a total of 8 wind instruments, 4 strings, a harp, piano, guitar, bass and drums, the line-up is more reminiscent of a small symphony orchestra than a big band. A crossover ensemble that works splendidly in both jazz and classical contexts and has virtually no limits in terms of sound. From swing to techno, free jazz, Latin and classical music - there is something of everything in the ensemble's musical cosmos.
