The “new” Schuppanzigh Quartet was formed in 1996, the 200th anniversary of its historical model – the string quartet founded in 1796 by Ignaz Schuppanzigh (1796-1830) – by musicians who have all made a name for themselves in the field of historical performance practice. They play on period instruments.

This series features the less well-known works among Haydn’s many quartets. In a short time, the Schuppanzigh Quartet has gained a reputation as one of the leading string quartets using original instruments, through exciting interpretations of the classic quartet literature as well as the performance of interesting new discoveries.

No one would seriously doubt the canonical ranking of the string quartets of Joseph Haydn; nonetheless, as with his symphonies, only a far too small selection of this group of works has been able to secure a place in the repertoire of the ensembles and in the catalogues of recording companies. The present three-volume anthology containing string quartets of Haydn aims to document the significance of Haydn's string-quartet production precisely with lesser-known works. This project is being realised by the Schuppanzigh Quartet, one of the most renowned quartets performing on historical instruments.
