Cleveland-based tenor saxophonist Ernie Krivda has recorded extensively as a leader since the 1970s, though he still remains under the radar of many jazz writers. He salutes Harvey Pekar (the late author and jazz journalist, who was an early champion of Krivda's work) with this release, accompanied by a talented rhythm section (pianist Claude Black, bassist Marion Hayden, and drummer Renell Gonsalves). Krivda's big tone and strong melodic sense are prominent in his ballad interpretations, particularly in his bittersweet rendition of "More Than You Know," where his deft use of vibrato adds a melancholy air to this standard, along with the heartfelt "Darn That Dream." He also adds two guest trumpeters, both rising young stars. Sean Jones is added for Sonny Rollins' delicious waltz "Valse Hot" and a snappy, intricate midtempo setting of Dexter Gordon's "Fried Bananas." Dominick Farinacci takes part in Krivda's driving setting of the standard "The End of a Love Affair" and the leader's loping tribute "Blues for Pekar." This top-drawer session by this long overlooked veteran bandleader merits attention from jazz enthusiasts, whether or not jazz critics figure it out for themselves.
