Miles Davis - Evolution Of A Genius- 1945-1954 (1995)

This is a nice sounding comp from the very reliable Giants of Jazz imprint, covering Miles' earliest years in the groups of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie's Orchestra, Bud Powell, and leading his own early ensembles between 1945 and 1953. Clocking in at just over 70 minutes, this disc may be a little light on notes, but the material is all top-notch and the sound is shockingly good. The program includes some real bop standards such as "Donna Lee," "Milestones," "Boplicity," and "Tempus -Fugit," just to name a few. There are also some surprises including the original version of George Russell's "Ezz-Thetic," and Gerry Mulligan's "Jeru." As a starter comp, this one is quite nice -- especially for the light price tag.~Thom Jurek
