Prisoners in Oslo Prison and skillingsviser are some of the ingredients Trond Kallevåg has been inspired by during the design of his upcoming album Fengselsfugl. It follows up the guitarist and composer's critically acclaimed album Bedehus & Hawaii (2019) which was among other things highlighted as one of the 15 best jazz albums in 2019 by Bandcamp.
As with the previous record, Fengselsfugl is recorded in the studio of Geir Sundstøl, who also appears on the record with his both predatory and spherical steel guitar playing that perfectly matches Kallevåg's obvious affection for atmospheric film music, gentle prayer house sacralism and Polynesian exotica.
"The inmates have told me interesting stories and, like us, carry hope, good and bad feelings. From the music room in Oslo Prison and with a panoramic view of Botsfengslet, I composed a lot of the music for the record. As on my previous album, Bedehus & Hawaii, I wanted to portray self-experienced moods in my encounter with environments that are next to the established. "
Untraditional instruments such as glass and saw give the soundscape the right cinematic and absurd atmosphere in Trond's compositions and could have been the perfect soundtrack to the prison film Wim Wenders never made, close to Ry Cooder and Bill Frisell.
