Angel Grant - Album (1998/2007)

On her debut album, this vocalist blurs musical genres into a style she describes as "folk funk." With fluttering soprano vocals, Grant soars through rhythmically melodic R&B ballads simmering with acoustic sensibilities. "Lil' Red Boat" sails on a buoyant melody that's helmed by wistful yet optimistic vocals. "I Love You" beats a prideful drum by employing a spare arrangement that taps an acoustic piano to support the tender lyrics. "I'm in Love with You" is a beautiful tune spiced by bluesy harmonica by Stevie Wonder, who lends the track a down-home feeling. "Deeper" weaves a rhythmic folk tale of hope to the cadence of a chipper, bouncy tempo. Emotionally, angst competes with promise on many tracks, but the set's positive force always prevails. --J.R.
