Eddie Cano - The Sound Of Music And The Sound Of Cano (2008) [Hi-Res]

Even Lloyds of London couldn't compute the odds that someday (1) a musical comedy about the refugee Trapp Family escaping from Europe's Nazi oppression would (2) someday become a smash Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, (3) a major Holly- wood movie, (4) and then (of all things) be made into a rocking record album (5) by a latin piano whiz who's big with the Watus: group in Hollywood . . . could they ? Long shot it may be. But this is one long shot that comes in first, pays off big, and lives to run again.

The gentle R-H score to “The Sound of Music” gets the most aggressive workout conceivable via Cano and his five latin rhythm men (Eddie Talamantes, congas; Manuel Lopez, maracas; Tony Reves, bass; Fred Aguirre, drums and tymps; and Carlos Mejia, bongos). With such a hot-blooded line up of musicians, fireworks do shoot. This LP fairly explodes with (ano’s incandescent, nonstop rhythm, plus a piano that's no gentle thing.

Why shouldn't it rock? Give us no idle chit-chat about “The Sound of Music” being about gentle, Alpine folk. That doesn’t mean the musical's music can’t rock. It can, it does, like rush hour in Spanish Harlem. Cano's arrangements shoot vigor into this score. They remove it from the pastel gentility the scores always been associated with. Cano & Co. inject the songs with more hormones than you'll find in a gross of A.W.0.L. Marines.
