Taken from the same live sessions as Vol. 4 (and last out several decades ago on Mercury) this fifth release by vibraphonist Terry Gibbs' "Dream Band" has plenty of swinging numbers from the 17-piece big band. Mostly comprised of West Coast jazz all-stars (including Richie Kamuca and Bill Perkins on tenors, trumpeter Conte Candoli, trombonist Frank Rosolino and drummer Mel Lewis), the orchestra is in top form on such numbers as "Tico Tico," "Billie's Bounce," "Jump the Blues Away" and a few obscure oriignals. The inventive arrangements by Bill Holman, Manny Albam and Al Cohn insured that Terry Gibbs' Dream Band would have its own sound and the fifth volume may very well be its finest.
