Superlatives are so cast about with reckless abandon in this the jet age that when you try to find the adjectives to describe someone who is obviously superior in his field, you find all the words have been taken.
Someday, in some future century, as archaeologists dig through the ashes of our culture, they will find we were the “est: the Tallest, the Fastest, the Mightiest, the Greatest, the Strongest, the Smartest, the Prettiest, the Cleverest, the Winningest, ad infinitum. But if in that far distant time the scientist is fortunate enough to find a Don Gibson record intact, he will know what we were really like. Even If the language Is different, it won't matter. He will know there was sensitivity, tenderness, compassion, love and understanding as an integral part of our way of life, for Don Gibson has translated all these intangible qualities into sounds which are ageless. And he speaks s0 simply that you know he speaks for the everyday man the ordinary human being with his hopes, dreams, aspirations . . . his hurts, his disappointments, his longings.
So I refrain from calling Don Gibson the greatest or the best, for I would not cast him in such an ordinary image. I do know he speaks to me and he speaks for me, for I know he has felt the same things that I have felt, and while I can only mumble unintelligibly about such things, he is able to throw his heart at the sky and make the world listen.
