Each of the four volumes in the massive anthology of historic music issued as That Devilin' Tune is packed with great music pulled from an unusually wide range of styles and musical categories. This genre-transcending approach is highly rewarding, as Vol. 2 combined many dozens of classic jazz recordings with entries by artists with enormously diverse backgrounds like Georgia hillbilly guitarist Riley Puckett and French poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau with L'Orchestre de Dan Parrish. The third volume zeroes in on the years 1934-1945, and is therefore primarily concerned with the transitional phenomenon usually referred to as Swing-to-Bop. The lineup is endlessly fascinating, as Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Albert Nicholas, and Mezz Mezzrow alternate with Lil Diamonds Hardaway and Old Ced Odom; Charlie Christian and Fred Astaire; Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Machito's Afro-Cuban Salseros, and Raymond Scott. There are also examples from Western swing heroes like Bob Wills, Milt Brown, and Roy Rogers, along with George Gershwin's Concerto in F, and staunch traditionalists Mutt Carey, Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, and Wooden Joe Nicholas. What you get in this compilation are 220 examples of musical relativity, all in one nine-CD box set.
