Jahrhunderts genau wie der Jazz. Zu Beginn basierte es oft auf einer eher willkürlichen Zusammenstellung populärer Hits des Tages, für die die besten Komponisten und Textdichter der New Yorker Tin Pan Alley sorgten, dem Zentrum der Musikindustrie bis in die 50er Jahre. Noch heute geläufig sind Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rodgers und Hammerstein, Jerome Kern und Oscar Hammerstein II. Letztere schufen 1927 mit 'Show Boat' ein neues Genre, das erstmalig Songs, Humor und Handlung zu einer untrennbaren, einzigartigen Einheit verband. Die Songs der Tin Pan Alley, heute als Great American Song Book bekannt, bildeten von Anfang an neben dem Blues das Themen-Material der Jazz-Musiker, die wiederum den musikalischen Fundus der Hitschreiber erweiterten. 1935 erschien die afro-amerikanische Love-Story 'Porgy and Bess' der Gershwin-Brüder George und Ira, aber erst durch die Verfilmung in den 50er Jahren erlangte diese erste Jazz-Oper zu Ruhm. Miles Davis und Oscar Peterson zeigen hier aufs Beste, wie man als Jazz-Musiker kreativ und völlig unterschiedlich dieses Meisterwerk instrumental umsetzen kann. Der Siegeszug der Langspielplatte sorgte in den späten 50er und frühen 60er Jahren für eine äußerst erfolgreiche Welle von Jazz-Produktionen, die sich einzelnen Musicals widmeten und deren beste Exemplare hier erstmals in einem Box-Set zusammengetragen sind.
