Hot Numbers Review by Alex Henderson
When a band enjoys a major hit, there is often the temptation to follow it up with something similar. Foxy did that in the late '70s, following up the 1978 smash "Get Off" with a similar disco-funk single titled "Hot Number" (which became Foxy's second and last major hit). "Hot Number" isn't an outright clone of "Get Off," although the two are undeniably similar. There were no other major singles on the Hot Numbers LP, which is regrettable because the rest of the album is rewarding more often than not. "Headhunter," "Devil Boogie," and the optimistic "Chicapbon, Chicapbon" are infectious disco-funk items, while "Nobody Will Ever Take Me Away From You" is a sentimental Latin soul ballad that should please anyone who spent a lot of time listening to Jose Feliciano or El Chicano in the 1970s. Meanwhile, "Lady of the Streets" almost sounds like a combination of reggae and Steely Dan -- not the sort of thing one expected from Foxy, but enjoyable. If Get Off is Foxy's most essential album, Hot Numbers runs a close second.
