Eleven years ago in a steamy Austin summer, four shaggy young men recorded their first full-length album together. Marrying fiery Texas blues with the kinetic rhythms of contemporary dance music, ‘The Bright Light Social Hour’ LP became a soundtrack for swimming holes, smoky barbecues, sweaty late night clubs, and swarthy breweries. The eponymous album became as philosopher/photographer Ben Michaelis put it, “the sound of Austin in two bars.”
After many years out of print on vinyl, The Bright Light Social Hour will be releasing a 180g reissue with a hand-illustrated cover by Cody Gunningham complete with a never-before-released song from the album sessions along with formative demos. The lost song “Ocean” was left on the cutting room floor after studio time ran dry. The hypnotic anthem has been recently completed by the band and reintroduced as track five on the record as originally intended.
