His First Symphony was a personal triumph for Elgar, who said, ‘I hold that the symphony without a programme is the highest development of art’. Wonderfully scored, opulent, and highly personal, it represented the culmination of many years of creative struggle with the symphonic form – ‘...almost terrifying in its greatness’, commented one dignitary at the premiere in 1908; ‘the greatest symphony of modern times, by the greatest modern composer’, said the conductor Hans Richter.
