Bunuel de Jour is the third release by Kalle Kalima & K-18 and continues their aural exploration of cinema. While the previous releases were inspired by the movies of Stanley Kubrick (Some Kubricks of Blood, TUM CD 022) and David Lynch (Out to Lynch, TUM CD 030), on Bunuel de Jour, the Berlin-based guitarist Kalle Kalima treats us to his impressions of certain central works of the legendary Spanish director Luis Bunuel, including Belle de Jour, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Tristana and An Andalusian Dog. Again featured with K-18 are saxophonist Mikko Innanen, bassist Teppo Hauta-aho and accordionist Veli Kujala, each an acknowledged master of his own instrument. The quartet's uncompromising approach to improvisation combines elements from free jazz, modern classical music and even avant-garde rock, which prove well suited for these reflections on the surrealistic world of Louis Bunuel.
