After an unexpected interlude in 2018 with the Jamaicans Sly & Robbie (Nordub, a Qobuzissime record!), Nils Petter Molvær returns to the grind with Stitches, an album that becomes him now more than ever... In 1997, when the ECM label published his astonishing Khmer, audiences discovered a Norwegian trumpeter who shook up the jazz scene by dabbling in electronics and ambient sounds. He was like a distant cousin of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell... For Stitches, Molvær had surrounded himself with drummer Erland Dahlen, bassist Jo Berger Myhre and guitarist Johan Lindstrøm for a hybrid outing which is carried by the ample and wide-open sound of his instrument, which he has fully mastered. The spontaneity of his playing and his fluidity fit perfectly with the poetic character of this soaring nu-jazz. In its new-age sequences, the album never grows complacent. And when the electronics take centre stage, they often serve to lend greater density to the compositions.
