Sue Sergel release autumn 2021
Black Molly Productions: This Alien Heart
“This is Gothic Americana: mournful hymns in a deserted cathedral, a bleak dystopia in an om inous wasteland. A cross between a desolate Western á la Ennio Morricone and a lost soundtrack to the “Apocalypse.” It is “Surf-metal” and “dep-symphony.” Håkan Forshult Last Buzz Records. “Sergel´s latest sounds like the perfect hybrid between Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Daniel Norgren, and Tom Waits.” Peter Holmstedt Gut Music News
Liverpool born Sue Sergel, Sweden´s ”Blues Queen” of the 80´s and 90´s, releases powerful new CD, with an apocalyptic-dystopic theme, inspired by everything from Lars von Triers “Melancholia,” to Stephen King´s “The Dark Tower.”
Following a VERY long break from performing due to “burned out syndrome” 1995, she has gradually taken a step further away from traditional blues with each album since her debut “Wild Women” (1994 Last Buzz Records). Having said that, her slightly hoarse voice and general “rough” approach reveal her bluesy roots.
On this latest release, she has extended her usual line-up: bassist Jimmy Olsson and guitarist Eric Ivarsson, with drummer Martina Almgren and keyboardist Johan Johansson. Guest appearances by the wonderful Gothenburg singers Hannah Tolf and Elina Ryd on “This Alien Heart” give the title track the slightly “spooky” ambience she was looking for.
