The music from two relatively rare LPs made for the Dobre label is reissued in full on this single CD. The first set is a rare opportunity for trumpeter Pete Candoli (who spent most of his career in studios and as part of big bands) to be heard in a quartet setting. Although not a major soloist, he sounds fine on five standards and two originals, heading a group also including pianist Lou Levy, bassist Fred Atwood, and drummer John Dentz. The second half of this reissue has the same band plus Pete's younger brother Conte Candoli and guitarist Joe Diorio. There is more fire to be heard as the brothers play off each other on a few fine jam pieces, including Miles Davis' "Ah-Leu-Cha," which is mistakenly credited to Pete Candoli. Although nothing essential occurs, it is good to have this fairly obscure music available again. ~ Scott Yanow
