This is the second in Classics' series of Artie Shaw CDs which reissue the master takes of all of the recordings from his prime period. It starts off with the final two sessions from his first big band, an intriguing ensemble consisting of Shaw's clarinet, four other horns (including Tony Pastor), a string quartet, and a four-piece rhythm section. On "Streamline" and "Sweet Lorraine," Shaw is the only horn floating above the strings. Other selections include "Sobbin' Blues," "Copenhagen," and four vocals for Peg Lacentra. Unfortunately, the band was not able to make it commercially (they were too far ahead of their time) so Shaw reluctantly broke it up in March 1937. However, he was soon back with a more conventional, stringless orchestra which is featured on three sessions included on this CD. Although Shaw's playing was quite recognizable, the band overall had not found their sound yet, despite Pastor still being one of the main soloists. But these early Shaw performances are fine examples of solid swing and are well worth hearing despite the lack of hits.~ Scott Yanow
