Singer Jeanine Mackie has been working the Toronto club scene for many years. In fact, she fronts her own R&B band. But there's more to Ms Mackie than meets the eye, or the ear as it were. Because she's also a marvelous, cool-toned jazz singer - and that's the talent on display on "The Night We Called It a Day," Blue Martini Jazz's debut album.
Blue Martini Jazz is Ms Mackie and saxman Pat Perez. Ms Mackie has a pleasing, well trained contralto voice with just enough brass at the edges to make it interesting. She handles the high notes without strain and moves along her register with ease. Mr Perez has a warm, mellow, late-night tone. His playing, at least as far as this album is concerned, is more lyrical than adventurous, relaxing rather than stimulating.
Ms Mackie and Mr Perez are joined by pianist Mark Eisenman, (Eric Boucher handles the piano on two tracks), bassist Niel Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke. They are solid players and the music flows easily.(By Gary L. Connely)
