Mutiny/The Bad Seed combines two mini-albums - Mutiny and The Bad Seed - which were originally released in a small edition in 1983. Both were recorded by the band in October 1982 in West Berlin. By then, The Birthday Party drummer Phil Calvert left the band due to creative differences, and guitarist Mick Harvey took over drumming duties. The album marked the first collaboration between Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld, who recorded guitar parts for the song "Mutiny in Heaven" and then joined Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for 20 years. The Bad Seed is also known for naming Cave's new band. One of Mutiny's tracks, "Six Strings That Drew Blood", was re-recorded by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on The Firstborn Is Dead. Shortly after the release of the original mini-albums, The Birthday Party disbanded. By the time this compilation was released, Nick Cave and Mick Harvey were performing together as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Roland S. Howard was in his own band, These Immortal Souls, and Tracey Pugh was found dead.
