By common critical consent, this is one of the late Woody Shaw's best albums, featuring a minor masterpiece of trumpet improvisation on 'Sippin' At Bells'. This recording, made in 1987, was the first to be released by IN + OUT Records. Unhappily it proved to be Woody Shaw's last recording under his own name. He died following a tragic accident in New York on March 10th, 1989. Miles Davis described Shaw as a great player with his own original ideas. Woody once said, '100% of me goes into being a creative musician, because I want to contribute to this beautiful art form called jazz.' With 'In My Own Sweet Way', Woody Shaw has made a most memorable contribution to the art of jazz.
„Although trumpeter Woody Shaw never really broke through to gain the recognition he deserved, he also never recorded an unworthy album. This late-period set for the German In & Out label (recorded only two years before his death) features Shaw with the Austrian drummer Alex Deutsch and a couple of talented Canadians: pianist Fred Henke and bassist Neil Swainson. They perform three standards (including Dave Brubeck's 'In Your Own Sweet Way' and 'Estate'), plus a pair of group originals and Theresa Trainello's 'Just A Ballad For Woody.' Excellent advanced hard bop.“ (Scott Yanow, AMG)
