Songs of Faith and Devotion is the eighth studio album by British electronic band Depeche Mode. The album was released on March 22, 1993 via Mute Records and a day later in the United States via Sire and Reprise Records. The album contains a darker and darker sound than its predecessor Violator, heavily influenced by the alternative and grunge scene in the US.
Songs of Faith and Devotion reached high positions in most of the country charts and also became the first Depeche Mode album to debut on the chart in both the UK and the US. In support of the album, Depeche Mode embarked on a tour called the Devotional Tour, which lasted 14 months, the band's longest tour to date.
The recording of the album and the subsequent tour exacerbated the growing tensions and difficulties within the band, prompting Alan Wilder to leave Depeche Mode, making Songs of Faith and Devotion his final album. The ordeal exhausted their creativity after the huge success they had achieved with Violator, leading to rumors in the media that the band would soon disband. Subsequently, Depeche Mode continued their active musical activity and released the next album, Ultra, in 1997.
As of April 1997, Songs of Faith and Devotion has sold 4.5 million copies worldwide.
