Gene Harris - Nexus (1975)

Nexus follows on from Astral Signal with the similar electronic funk-fusion style. This album though has far fewer of the straighter jazz efforts that were on Astral Signal; basically it is pretty much electronic keys throughout, and though I'm a lover of soaring electronic keyboard grooves, it can get a little too much after a while. I personally find some of it just a bit too up the treble end of the spectrum for my tastes, but we’re all tone deaf in one way or another, so I suppose what will grate me could easily please someone else. I think this is the only Gene Harris album from his solo ‘70s period were none of the tracks appear on some rare-groove compilation or another. So even though this album isn’t as good as his other solo works it’s worth getting for the very short opening track which is a fantastic blacksploitation funk groove that would fit perfectly into any Pam Grier film from the ‘70s.
