The Fidelio Trio continues to gain an ever more positive reputation as one of Europe’s most skilful and innovative ensembles, and is also gaining quite a following in the USA. They record for Naxos, NMC, Resonus, Delphian and Col Legno as well as Métier. In their latest album they present four new Piano Trios by Irish composers, which exhibit all that is best in the music of today – no rigid adherence to formal rules of the classical era, individual style, but also very pleasant, generally tonal and accessible, vibrant and exciting music.

The four works here are all receiving their first recording, though plans are in hand for two sequel albums. The disc demonstrates also (as did Mary Dullea’s recent solo album ‘Gothic’ the wealth of talent which is brewing in Ireland. Three of the works (those by Bodley, Buckley and Johnston) were commissioned by the Fidelio Trio as part of their recent residency at St. Patrick’s College, Dublin University. They are works not constrained by modernism and should gain a wide appreciation.
