Nika Rejto - Midnite Kiss (2003)

Nika Rejto is a very fluent and highly expressive flutist based in northern California. Previously, she released an LP in the mid-'80s and two CDs during the following decade, all on her Unika label. Hopefully, Midnite Kiss will result in the flutist becoming much better known. Rejto's music (eight of the ten songs on this disc are her originals) is filled with joy, wit, and creative swing. She is assisted by a rhythm section that includes the colorful pianist Bevan Manson and the fine cool-toned guitarist Rick Vandivier. Among the better songs are the excellent ballad "Crystal Door," the moderately funky "Please Don't Say Bonsoir," the catchy "Caterpillar Rag," and a wistful flute/piano duet, "Chante des Arbes." There is also a vocal feature for Linda Tillery ("Melody of Love") and a guest appearance by flügelhornist Dmitri Matheny. Throughout, Rejto plays with warmth, sensitivity, and taste. Her satisfying effort is easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
