African, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences are united into a cohesive and enriching whole on Mambo El Soudani, which the Nubian band Salamat recorded in Cairo, Egypt in 1993. One of the things that makes this CD interesting is its blend of instruments -- the lead vocals of Fathi Abou Greisha and Sala Abd Rady are accompanied by North African and Arabic percussion instruments as well as bass, accordion and a horn section that includes two saxophones and a trumpet. Accordionist Hassan Meky is also heard on electric keyboards, but on the whole, this is an acoustic-oriented recording (which certainly sets it apart from a lot of the high-tech rai music that was being recorded in Algeria, another North African country, in the 1990s). Only "Shamandoura" is sung in Nubian; all of Salamat's other vocals on Mambo El Soudani are in Arabic. Lovers of both African and Middle Eastern roots music can appreciate this captivating CD, which was released in Germany by the Berlin-based Piranha label but found its way to other countries as an import.
