Joan Beal, the wife of trumpeter-keyboardist Jeff Beal (who co-leads this date), has a lovely voice and a wide range; however, the music that the Beals perform together on their CD is essentially atmospheric new age. There is very little variety, which makes this a difficult set to stay awake during. The Beals are assisted by Steve Tavaglione on various flutes, slide whistles and the English horn, John Patitucci makes a few appearances on baritone guitar and bass, and there are several quiet percussionists. But the one-dimensional nature of the music -- along with the sameness of most of the performances -- makes this a CD that should be overlooked by all but the more devoted new age followers.~Scott Yanow
