Raised in Pittsburgh guitarist Jack Turner earned his first merits as a member of jazz organist Charles Earland's band and appeared on five recordings from 1973-1977.
With his solo album I Got Next Jack Turner returns to the audience and opens a new chapter in his musical life. The album already received rave reviews at CDBaby and by Ronald Jackson.
Guitarist Jack Turner is supported on this recordings by Mose Davis, Carl Breeding and Moe Daniels (keyboards), Jeff Smith and Sam Sims (bass), Melvin Jones (trumpet), William Green (piano), David Haynes and Aaron Turner (drums), and Kofi Macdonald (percussion) on selected tracks.
The first tune Show Me Some Love starts in a confusing mode that gives the impression the instruments should have to first find their destination. But soon all proceeds in calm waters and smooth jazz makes the sun rise.
The Black Mamba is one of the highly toxic snakes. This piece has no poison teeth but a wonderful party groove which has that funky R&B flavor of Kool and the Gang. Trumpet player Melvin Jones delivers an outrageously bluesy tone to Turner's guitar riffs. On The Golden Mile Jack Turner goes to the forefront with artful guitar work.
Carnival De Amor sways in Brazilian swing. Turner acts around a background of strings and flutes with a constant Bossa Nova rhythm. Chauncey Drive is a street in Pittsburgh. Jack Turner has dedicated this tune to the citizens of this street. On Hit Me Up Turner builds his improvisations on a repetitive phrase.
A Day In A Life presents the vintage side of the album with Turner's raw handling of the guitar and Moe Daniels' Hammond B3 joining in until the quick cut. Always and Forever is an R&B song written by Rod Temperton and first recorded by the British-based band Heatwave in 1976. Turner renders a devoted rendition. With Speak Low Jack Turner keeps it gently. The slow paced guitar presentation is underlined with mellow strings.
Bumpin' On Sunset was originally released by Wes Montgomery on his album Tequila (1966). Turner's rendition is a bluesy, steady, heavy, in deep going Ibanez guitar finger style. The Latin music inspired Mucho Gordo is a good platform for further Ibanez excursions. The Creator is Jack Turner's manifest for a better world and reveals his religious strong faith.
Jack Turner offers with I Got Next a multicolored album with many facets predominantly outside the smooth jazz mainstream.
