While a reserved and often overlooked player, Bennie Green stood out from other leading jazz trombonists because of his unique style and unparalleled skill on the instrument. While many of his contemporaries would emulate the pioneering work of fellow player J.J. Johnson, who had developed the trombone into a lead instrument in jazz, Green stuck to his own course and incorporated elements of swing, soul and bebop into his sound. Despite having had a recording career that only lasted two decades, he still managed to put out a substantial body of work, including a string of truly exceptional albums. And while Green appeared alongside a host of jazz greats - including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan and George Benson - it was as a band leader that Green s playing truly excelled, most notably during the late 1950s and early 1960s. This collection, featuring almost five hours of music across four discs, collates the entirety of Bennie Green s recorded output during the latter part of his career. Housing eight complete, remastered albums originally released between 1958 and 1964, this compilation reveals a lovingly skilled, albeit it often overlooked, musician while in the prime of his career.
