Betty Wright - The Deep City Recordings (2022)

While Willie Clarke and Johnny Pearsall were kickstarting their Deep City label, 12-year-old Betty Clarke was harboring a juggernaut-of-a-voice begging for stardom. When Clarke heard Betty sing “Summertime” at Pearsall's record shop, he knew she’d be laying down Deep City’s next record. Wright cut “Good Lovin’” b/w “Paralyzed” in the summer of 1967. With Betty’s older sister Jeanette and fellow Deep City vocalist Helene Smith dishing out backing vocals, it’s perhaps the most realized record of Deep City’s. Betty’s laudable pipes and exuberance on stage fomented her illustrious career at Deep City and subsequent labels.
