Jasmine Guy is the studio debut album by American actress-singer Jasmine Guy, released in October 1990 under Warner Bros. Records. The album peaked at No. 143 on the Billboard 200 and 38 on Top R&B Albums chart. The singles, "Another Like My Lover", "Try Me" and "Just Want to Hold You", where top 40 hits on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart. Although the album was an overall success, plans for a follow-up release were terminated when Guy and Warner Bros. Records ended their three-year relationship in 1993.

AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson:

All too often, actors and actresses who decided to pursue careers as singers made listeners wish they had stuck with acting. One embarrassing example was Jasmine Guy, who aimed at the urban contemporary market with this generic release. Guy's thin, Paula Abdul-ish voice isn't the least bit impressive, and it certainly isn't enough to make weak, mundane tunes like "Everybody Knows My Name," "Tuff Boy," and the new jack swing-influenced "Try Me" come to life. The funk-rock song "Don't Want Money" isn't bad, but most of the CD is shamelessly formulaic. And having accomplished producers like Full Force, Mic Murphy, (formerly of the System) and Timmy Gatling on board doesn't erase the fact that Guy's voice and the material simply aren't happening. This album made it clear that acting, not singing, was Guy's calling.

User Reviews:

Never seen a more bitter or inaccurate review as the one for the self-titled Jasmine Guy album. Perhaps the reviewer has been living in "A Different World". What the All Music Guide reviewer sees as weak vocals are nothing more than exquisite and vulnerable, yet strong vocal stylings of a multi-talented woman (YES--some women CAN have it all and that shouldn't come as a threat to the masculinity-threatened men who might pick this up for a listen). Decades later this CD remains in constant rotation in my collection. The true gem is the under-appreciated "I Wish You Well" a confident anthem of moving on which I'm going to do from the pathetic All Music Guide review for a truly EXCELLENT CD from the wonderful JASMINE GUY!
